Hola, I’m Lizbeth, a postpartum doula serving families in Denver and I want to answer the question I hear the most, “What does a postpartum doula actually do?” Here’s my answer.
A postpartum doula supports your whole family after the baby arrives. Life with a newborn can bring many questions, and by hiring a trained doula you receive- emotional care, practical help around feeding, and guidance while you recover and adjust to life with your newborn. I’m not there to take over at all. I’m there so you can come back to your home and allow yourself to rest, gently heal, and feel deeply supported while in your postpartum phase.
What postpartum doula support can look like
Every family is different, but support often includes:
Emotional support. A calm, nonjudgmental person to listen when you’re overwhelmed, processing your birth, or just need to cry.
Newborn care guidance. Help with soothing, diapering, bathing, sleep patterns, and what’s normal in the early weeks.
Feeding support. Encouragement and practical help with breastfeeding, pumping, or bottle feeding.
For medical concerns, I’ll point you to a lactation consultant or your provider.
Nourishing meals and recovery. Warm, brothy simple meals and teas that support healing, plus light tidying.
Partner support. Partners are new at this too, and I help them feel involved and confident.
Rest. Sometimes the most valuable thing I do is hold the baby so you can give your self love as well.
How is a postpartum doula different from other providers?
Not a midwife or OBGYN. Doulas don’t provide medical care or deliver babies. If something seems medically concerning, I’ll help you reach the right provider.
Not a nanny or baby nurse. The goal isn’t to replace you. It’s to help you learn your baby and trust your instincts.
Not a family member. Loved ones mean well, but a doula brings training, objectivity, and no opinions about how you “should” do it.
When is the best time to hire a postpartum doula?
Many families reach out during pregnancy so support is lined up before the baby comes.
